READ5 Childhood Books We Still Love

Toby

There’s something comforting about re-reading a book you read as a kid.

It’s a familiar story, yet still captures your imagination as it takes you on its journey all over again.

Here’s 5 childhood books that we still love:

The Bridge to Terabithia

Katherine Paterson’s 1977 classic tells the story of Jesse Aarons and his friendship with Leslie Burke. It showcases the power of a child’s imagination, and the ability it has to bring friends and family closer together. Chances are, you studied this in English at some point in time, teachers love this one. Also, you’ve probably seen the film adaptation from 2007 (the one with teenage Josh Hutcherson). The novel’s tragic twist also gave us, as kids, an understanding of grief, something that everybody has to experience at some point in their lives. This book remains a classic to this day, and for good reason.

The Story of Ferdinand

Munro Leaf, with the illustrations of Robert Lawson, captured our hearts in 1936 with The Story of Ferdinand. It tells the story of, you guessed it, Ferdinand, a bull who would rather sit underneath a cork tree and smell the flowers, instead of competing in bullfights. He is the largest and strongest of his herd, and is taken to Madrid to fight a matador, but instead sits down in the middle of the ring admiring the flowers in the female spectator’s hair. It’s a simple story that still manages to encourage not only peace, but being true to yourself.

Oh The Places You’ll Go!

Dr Seuss’ classic story of growing up, and the challenges that come with it, still resonates with us to this day. The rhyming tale was actually given to me as a graduation gift by a teacher of mine, and while it’s a small, relatively simple novel, the message behind it made me feel ready to face the future ahead of me. I’ll still occasionally read it, just to remind myself that no matter what challenges pop up in life, you can still get through them.

Goosebumps

R.L Stine’s children’s ‘horror’ novels (can’t make them too scary, they’re for kids after all), began all the way back in 1992 with the Goosebumps Original Series, and are still going to this day with Goosebumps SlappyWorld, with heaps of books in between. They filled up my primary school library, and not a day went by where at least one person wasn’t reading a Goosebumps book. They introduced us to the idea that sometimes, scary things can be fun, if you look at it differently.

Harry Potter

J.K Rowling first introduced us to the Wizarding World back in 1997 with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Since then, we’ve seen another 6 books and 10 movies (can’t forget Fantastic Beasts!), all of which have been huge successes. These books captured the minds and imaginations of millions of people, both young and old, worldwide, and they still do to this day! They remain a classic, and probably will for many, many years to come.

So that’s our list! We struggled getting it down to 5 – we wanted to add so many more.

What would your top 5 be? Any childhood classics we missed that you still pull off the book shelf every now and then? Let us know in the comments below!
