If you’re planning to head to uni after school, then attending an open day is a must.

There’s no better way to find out about all the courses on offer, meet the professors and tutors and, most importantly, suss out the vibe – you’ll be spending a lot of time on campus so it’s important to make the right choice!  Check out our top tips for making the most of university open days.

Know Your Stuff

Even though a university open day is a great source of info, it’s good to have done your homework. Research each university, make a note of the courses available, investigate whether you may be eligible for bonus points, scholarships etc. and have a couple of questions ready to ask on the day. This will make it easier to compare each uni and work out which ones you want to visit. Check out UAC’s list of uni profiles to get you started.

Have A Plan

It’s easy to lose track of time on the day, so have a plan of what you most want to do and see while you’re there. Most universities will have an open day schedule available on their website prior to the day so get yourself a copy and highlight any lectures, info sessions or activities you want to check out. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for events run by clubs and societies – they’re a great way to meet people and explore the opportunities available beyond your degree.

Explore The Campus

There’s more to uni than just lectures and tutes – most offer a gym (or two!), pool, cafes, bars, medical facilities and a variety of student support services, so make time on the day to explore the campus for yourself and find out what’s available. Know what’s important to you and what will make your experience as enjoyable as possible –  for those of you living on campus, these can be a dealbreaker!

Go With Someone

Just because you’re the one who has to make the ultimate decision about which university is right for you doesn’t mean you have to do it alone. Take along someone you trust, whether that be a parent, sibling or friend and get a second opinion. They may notice something about the course or the campus that you otherwise wouldn’t have, and can make the whole experience less daunting.
