CAREHow To Save Your Hair This Summer

Alyssia

We are getting VERY close to summertime, and that means BBQ’s, beach days and lots, and LOTS of sun!

The sun isn’t always the killer of your hair, but if you don’t look after your locks well, they can get very dry over the summertime. These tips will help you keep your hair looking luscious and healthy!

Wear Your Hair Up

A high ponytail or a top-knot fresh out of the shower can keep your hair damp and moisturised for most of the day. This will keep your hair protected and conditioned in the hot sun.

Feel free to also do your hair up in a scarf or cover it up under a hat. Braids are also a great idea, especially if you have a lot of hair!

Essential Oils

Using essential oils in your hair can work wonders. Remember that you only need a tiny portion of any essential oil to work wonders, over-using them can leave your hair really oily. I recommend coconut oil or argan oil, even Moroccan oil, they all work for me! But try a few out to find out what works best for your hair type.

Top Tip! After you go for a swim in the ocean, massage in some coconut oil whilst your hair is still wet and let it dry in the sun with the natural sea salt – works wonders!

Conditioner, Conditioner & more Conditioner

Using a leave-in conditioner with coconut or argan essential oils in them can be a deal breaker for the health of your hair. Giving your hair a thorough shampoo and condition after you’ve been to the beach can seriously help to maintain the health of your hair. But watch you don’t over-do it! Because too much conditioner can create an imbalance of the natural oils in your hair. Furthermore, it is really important to find a product that is good for your hair and that you feel comfortable using. Natural brands such as Herbal Essence Smooth, Bumble & Bumble or Moroccanoil Moisture are brands that I personally think are awesome, give them a try!

Hydrating Masks

Hydrating masks can be bought at the shops, however, if we are trying to move away from unnatural chemicals, making hair-masks at home can be fun and rewarding! For any mask, wet your hair and then dampen with a towel. Massage the mask into your hair, from the tips to the roots, and leave for 15-20 minutes. Here is a list of some super moisturising hair masks that you can make by yourself!

  • Milky Cream Mask  – Avocado, honey, yoghurt
  • Natural Acidity Mask  – Blended strawberries, egg yolk, olive oil
  • The Aloha Mask – Banana, Avo, Coconut
  • Summer Blend Mask – Yoghurt, apple cider vinegar, lemon
  • Exotic Jungle Mask –  Coconut Oil, Jojoba oil, peppermint essential oil

Avoid Using Curling Irons & Straighteners

The sun is hot enough as it is…give you hair a summer break too and let it be natural! It is really important that we all love and accept our hair the way it is! My hair is naturally long, brown and curly, and for years I straightened it every day, and I damaged it beyond repair. Finally, when I was 16 I began to accept it for how it is, and today the results of giving it a break from the hot-irons are amazing! (Of course, I still straighten it for special occasions)I really encourage you to give your hair a break, and let it be natural this summer <3
