CAREWhich Hair Removal Method Is Right For You?

If you've got unwanted hair that has got to go then one of these hair removal options might be for you!

Body hair. It’s a topic that can inspire pride and confidence, but for a lot of us, it can also be an uncomfortable thing to talk about. The decision to remove body hair is totally down to personal preference. Whether you choose to keep it natural, or prefer to get rid of the lot, we think there’s really no right or wrong. Asking for advice when it comes to hair removal can be awkward to say the least, so we’ve reviewed four popular hair removal methods to help you decide which, if any, is right for you.

Shaving

Shaving is probably the most popular hair removal method for both guys and girls. It’s a cheap and readily available way to remove unwanted hair instantly, without leaving the comfort of your bathroom. Shaving also exfoliates your skin, ensuring a smooth finish every time and is pretty much pain free if done correctly. Unfortunately, the results of shaving usually last a couple of days at best, and it isn’t the best method for more sensitive areas. It also takes some practice – even the most experienced shavers can end up with a nasty cut if they’re not careful!

Best for: Facial hair (guys), legs and underarms.

Waxing

If shaving your legs every week seems like a chore, waxing may be the way to go. While there are at-home waxing kits available, we recommend heading to your local beauty salon even if it is a little more expensive, especially if you’re a hair removal newbie. The results of waxing can last anywhere from three to six weeks as the hair is being pulled from the root, and you can wax pretty much anywhere on your body. Waxing can be a little painful depending on the area, and isn’t suitable for all skin types, so it is worth asking for a test patch just in case.

Best for: Eyebrows/face, legs and bikini line.

Epilation

We don’t recommend trying this on sensitive areas, but the results really do speak for themselves. You know what they say – no pain, no gain! Epilation works by using an at-home device to pluck the individual hairs from the root, resulting in less hair growth over time. For larger areas, such as legs, epilating can save time and provide more even results than other hair removal methods. The results last around four weeks and the process can be done with wet or dry skin, making it perfect while travelling. Epilators start at around $80, so they aren’t the cheapest option, but think of all the money you’ll save on buying razors – it could be worth the investment.

Best for: Legs!

Laser

Sick of having to remove hair all the time? Laser could be the answer to your prayers. It results in a permanent reduction of unwanted hair meaning you’ll never need to shave, wax or epilate again. It almost sounds too good to be true! You’ll need to visit your local laser clinic prior to your first appointment to assess whether your hair/skin is suitable for the treatment, and how many sessions you will need. If you’re under 16, most laser clinics will require you to have the consent of a parent before starting the treatment. Laser hair removal can be a little uncomfortable, but the cooling feature on the machine means any discomfort is gone almost instantly. Prices vary depending on the area for treatment, so if you’re on a budget, stick to smaller areas which are usually more affordable.

Best for: Underarms and intimate areas.

The most important thing when it comes to hair removal is that, whichever method you choose (if any), you choose the one that you’re most comfortable with. Just because a particular method worked for your best friend or your mum doesn’t mean it’s right for you!
