DJ

After seeing the movie at the premiere, Toby and I have been talking about it non-stop.

We can’t wait for you guys to see it, cause was our favourite comic book movie of 2018!

And that’s even behind Avengers: Infinity War! Critics agree as well with a score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes! Here’s what we had to say about the latest addition to Marvel’s movie catalogue.

Music

The soundtrack of the movie is yet to be released at the time of writing, however I can say that it includes many familiar artists. The movie features an original song by Post Malone and Swae Lee, ‘Sunflower’ that manages to encapsulate the feel of the movie in a few short minutes. The same can be said for the rest of the soundtrack. All of the music fits perfectly into the film and seamlessly transports you into the Spider-Verse. The music is incredibly engaging, the kind of music you could picture Miles Morales, the film’s protagonist, jamming out to. A hip-hop heavy track-list draws you into the movie and amplifies the action scenes even more.

Art Style

The art-style is a hybrid of golden-age comic books and new, 3D animation. The overarching visual aesthetic used is a classic in comic design, ‘Ben-Day Dots’ which are basically a printing process in which the shading was added using dots (you’ll recognise it instantly!). The style for the movie is somewhat a combination of both 3D and 2D art, with Sony developing new animation software that allowed their animators to combine the best of both worlds. Using these styles and techniques, the film’s animators were able to create a visually stunning look into the Spider-Man universe (or the Spider-Verse!). Action sequences were colourful and breathtaking with some scenes evidently being the animators flexing their artistic muscles. In saying this, the art style wasn’t even the best bit about this movie, but it certainly helps.

Comic Callbacks

Being a comic book movie, it naturally had to have some call backs to the characters roots. This was done partly using text boxes for some of the dialogue. The artistic design choice was a bold move but was executed perfectly. The classic style of comic book text-box was slightly revamped and it was a welcome addition to the movie.
Also be sure to stay until the end credit scene as it includes the best call back of them all! Toby and I were coming right off the high of watching the movie that we thought the end credit scene could not live up to expectations but it managed to exceed them! We won’t spoil it for you but the whole cinema was glued to the screen during the short post-credit scene.

So Funny!

Marvel has really stepped up their game recently when it comes to the comedic side of film making and ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ is no different. The jokes all hit and timing was great as well. Visual comedy as well as verbal comedy is used throughout with a high rate of success. The jokes, however, are not over the top, placed in the parts which allow for a joke to be told. Recurring jokes were present which had the potential to become annoying, but they ended up being some of the funniest parts! The audience in the cinema erupted with laughter at every repetition of the jokes, and they only got funnier.

Plot Was On Point

The plot may be one of the most enjoyable in the Marvel movie catalogue. With twists and turns along the way and moment requiring tissues and other bringing laughter and excitement, the plot is packed with entertainment. The characters all fit in well, although we may be bias to the other Spidermen who join the action. Prepare to be taken on a proper journey along with Miles and his newfound friends as the story progresses quite fast and you need to keep up.

Overall the movie is definitely worth the watch! Toby and I highly recommend getting together with all of your friends and heading to see this movie as soon as it comes out! From the music, to the art, to the jokes, to the story, the movie impresses at every turn.
