MOVETeam Sports: Why Working Out Alone Just Can't Compare

Toby

Some people may prefer to chuck in some earphones and run, or hit the gym, or go for a swim. These are all great workouts, but they’re missing one thing, other people.

Team sports provide a completely different experience to working out alone, so here’s a few reasons why working out alone just can’t compare:

Meet New People, Make New Friends

A very obvious one, but the most important. Being part of a team brings with it a ton of benefits.

First and foremost, you’re meeting new people. Being part of a team is an amazing way to make new friends, some of which can stick with you for life. You come closer together as a team through highs and lows of a season, building a sense of camaraderie amongst you. This only makes the sport more fun as the season progresses.

Inspires You To Achieve Individual Greatness

Being part of a team also inspires you to achieve greater results. When you train together as a team, you’ll probably all start at different levels of skill, fitness etc., but as the season progresses, you all encourage each other to work harder and harder to not only achieve greater things as a team, but as individuals too. This makes it much easier to achieve your own fitness goals, with the support of your team and coaches on your side.

Being part of a team also encourages you to value each member of that team for their strengths, and help them improve on their weaknesses. By making sure each player is valued equally, it encourages everyone to keep working hard, ensuring everyone achieves the best result possible.

Promotes Team Spirit

Being part of a team also promotes co-operation, patience and optimism. Undoubtedly, there will be times where your team isn’t doing too well. You might be on a bit of a losing streak, or people might be injured, unable to participate and help out as much as they once could.

This may make the team angry, but it also forces you to come closer together and co-operate more with each other to get back on track. This might mean being patient with the team instead of turning to anger, or being optimistic in the face of defeat. By harnessing the team spirit within all of you, you overcome any adversity that comes your way. All of these skills, honed and improved by team sport, come in very handy later in life.

It’s More Fun

There’s always more fun to be had with a group of people. When you’re training and competing as a team, you learn more about each other, and soon enough, you’re cracking jokes with each other, the banter bouncing off each other. While your coaches might not really like it when you’re in stitches from laughter while they’re trying to talk to you, it’s those small moments that really bring the team together. This just gets better and better throughout the season, making it a part of your week that you really look forward to.

The Best Moments Become Much Better

There is nothing better, when you’re part of a team, than succeeding and achieving great things. On your own, succeeding is awesome, because you know that you did it all on your own, but in a team, it’s a bit different. When you succeed as a team, you know that you succeeded because you came together, you relied on each other and you had each other’s backs. This makes success just that extra bit sweeter. The post-season meet-up at your local park, with a barbecue cook-up and a kick around, is that much more rewarding. You’ve bonded with a group of people who were once strangers, you’ve faced heaps of challenges throughout the season and you came out victorious.

And you know what, even if you didn’t succeed as much as you wanted to, you still made a bunch of new friends, you had a ton of fun, and there’s always next season.
